Kits are turned into apprentices after they are six moons old.
"By naming apprentices, we show that ____clan will survive and remain strong. ___kit, from now on you will be know as ___paw...
_____, you are ready for an apprentice. You will mentor ___paw."
- warrior ceremony:
Warriors are appointed after they have finished their training and have been to moonstone.
"___paw, You have served your clan well in your apprenticeship. You have now proved your fighting and hunting skills, and it is time for you to receive your warrior name. From this day forward, you will now be known as ______. We welcome you as a full warrior of __clan."
- deputy ceremony:
A new deputy must be appointed before moonhigh on the day that the old Deputy was killed.
"I say these words before the body of _______, so that his spirit may hear and approve of my choice.
________ will be the new Deputy of ____clan."
- leader ceremony:
After the previous leader dies, the Deputy will take a trip to Moonstone with the Medicine cat only, and will meet with their ancestors. They will receive their nine lives and will receive the "star" at the end of their name. ( Birchfall turns to Birchstar.)
- medicine cat ceremony:
The Medicine cat apprentice travels to Moonstone with one warrior, often the Deputy, and their mentor, and shares tongues with starclan. She/he will then be appointed a medicine cat and receive a special gift to interpret the signs that Starclan sends. This ceremony is generally told by the Medicine cat, not the leader.
"____, do you promise to uphold the ways of a medicine cat, to stand apart from the rivalry between clans, and to protect all cats equally even at the cost of your life?"
"I do"
"Then by the powers of Starclan, I give you your true medicine cat name. _____, from this moment on you will be known as _____."
- elder ceremony:
When a warrior has served their time to their clan they will be honored and join the elders. Elders are always respected and often consult the leader on large matters because of their wisdom.
"_____, is it your wish to give up the life of a Warrior and Join the Elders?"
"It is"
"Your clan honors you and your service you have given us. I ask Starclan to give you many seasons of rest..."
The Warrior Code
- the warrior code is a series of laws laid down by StarClan for all of the Clans to follow. While the exact code is not really listed anywhere, it is clear to all Clans what the rules in the warrior code are. There are countless other laws in the warrior code. If warriors break this code, a punishment, whether it be from a duty involving caring for the elders to exile to even death, will undoubtedly result. The punishment depends on the severity of the broken code and the Clan leader himself. For example, if an apprentice had been caught eating during a hunting mission, they may be punished simply by not being allowed to take any fresh-kill for the rest of the day. Another example could be if a cat betrayed their Clan. The Clan leader may decide to exile them as proper punishment.
As written in Secrets of the Clans, the laws of the warrior code are:
- defend your Clan, even with your life. (You may have friendships with cats from other Clans, but your loyalty must remain to your Clan, as one day you may meet them in battle.)
- one should never hunt or trespass on another Clan's territory.
Punishment: Most cats are attacked if found.
- elders and kits must be fed before apprentices and warriors. Unless they have permission, apprentices may not eat until they have hunted to feed the elders.
Punishment: The offender is usually given no food for the rest of the day.
- prey is killed only to be eaten. Give thanks to StarClan for its life.
- a kit must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice.
- newly appointed warriors will keep a silent vigil for one night after receiving their warrior name.
- a cat cannot be made deputy without having mentored at least one apprentice.
- the deputy will become Clan leader when the leader dies or retires.
- after the death or retirement of the deputy, the new deputy must be chosen before moonhigh.
- a gathering of all four Clans is held at the full moon during a truce that lasts for the night. There shall be no fighting among the Clans at this time.
- boundaries must be checked and marked. Challenge all trespassing cats.
- no warrior may neglect a kit in pain or in danger, even if that kit is from a different Clan.
- the word of the Clan leader is the warrior code.
- an honorable warrior does not need to kill other cats to win his battles, unless they are outside the warrior code or it is necessary for self-defense.
- a warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet.
Other Things Regarding the Code
- the Clan is to be fed before any individual cat.
Punishment: Usually, the offending warrior gets no prey for a day.
- the safety of the Clan is more important than that of any individual cat.
- each Clan has specific borders.
Punishment: Usually, a conflict or battle will take place regarding the boundary.
- prey is not to be stolen from another Clan's territory.
- clan borders are not to be crossed (unless of special occasions going to the Moonstream or crossing one another's territory to get to Fourtrees for Gatherings. Raids are different, that is war.)
Punishment: The crosser can be attacked by a border patrol.
- a Gathering lasts as long as the moon is highest in the sky.
- there is a truce during the Gathering. Under no circumstances may the truce be broken.
Punishment: Clouds will cover the moon, showing StarClan's anger, and the clans will be subject to StarClan's wrath.
- medicine cats may not fall in love nor have kits.
Punishment: The cat, if female, will be forced to give up her kits.
- cats may not fall in love with nor have kits with cats from other Clans. (however this is often broken)
- kits must be at least six moons old to be an apprentice.
- kits may not leave the camp without permission.
Punishment: Depends on the kit's mother or father; the offending kit usually must stay in the nursery. However, depending on the severity, kits' apprenticeship may be delayed.
- kits may not learn to hunt until they are apprenticed.
Punishment: Usually, the kit will have to stay in the nursery.
- apprentices must accompany the leader to the Moonstream and to a Gathering as a part of their training.
- newly made warriors must sit vigil for their first night and guard the camp in silence.
- warriors may not kill in cold blood.
Punishment: The cat may be exiled
.
- warriors must show compassion.
- a deputy must be chosen before moonhigh of the previous deputy's resignation or death.
- a Queen does not have to tell the clan who the kit's father was, and it is considered very rude to ask a tom if he was the father.
- to be a deputy a cat must have had an apprentice.
- warriors may not attack a medicine cat.
- cats have free passage to the Moonstream.
- strangers should be driven from a Clan's territory.
- cats should show mercy to cats who ask for help.
- warriors do not fight to kill; they fight to prove their strength and defend their territory.
You may break any of these rules, but if you do, you are subject to punishment at your leader's discretion.
